The Best Time to Visit Los Cabos (From Someone Who Lives Here)

The honest answer to "when should I go to Los Cabos?" is: it depends on the trip you want. I live here year-round, so I see every season up close — the calm mornings of October, the whale spouts of February, the buzzing patios of spring break. Here is how I think about timing when I am planning a trip for a client.

Peak season: December through April

Peak season means full resorts, perfect weather, and elevated prices — book early for the best properties.

This is the postcard version of Los Cabos — sunny days in the high 70s and low 80s, cool evenings, and almost no rain. It is also the most expensive and the most booked, especially around the December holidays, Presidents' weekend, and spring break.

If your heart is set on a specific resort or a big celebration, this is the window I tell clients to book first — six to twelve months ahead for the marquee properties, and even earlier for villas and large groups.

Whale season is its own reason to come

A sunset sail where a humpback breaches a hundred yards off the bow is the kind of moment people remember for years.

From mid-December into early April, gray and humpback whales move through the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific side. A sunset sail where a humpback breaches a hundred yards off the bow is the kind of moment people remember for years.

I build whale watching into a lot of winter itineraries, and I know which operators run the smaller, better boats — the ones worth booking before they sell out.

Shoulder season: May, and again October–November

Shoulder season brings the same beautiful light with noticeably thinner crowds and better rates.

This is my quiet favorite. The weather is still beautiful, the crowds thin out, and rates soften noticeably. May before the summer heat, and the stretch from mid-October into November after hurricane season settles, are both excellent value.

If you are flexible on dates, this is where I can often stretch your budget into a better room category or a longer stay.

Summer and early fall: warm, lush, and quiet

June through September is hot and humid, with the chance of a passing storm in late summer. The trade-off is real value and a calm, local pace. It is a great window for travelers who want pool-and-spa time more than long days outdoors.

Whatever month you are eyeing, tell me what you want the trip to feel like and I will tell you honestly whether the timing fits — and what to book first.
